Tom Jones

I continue to listen to this excellent novel.  I believe this is the best novel I have ever encountered.  It has pathos, wit, wisdom, an engaging story, and much useful advice and commentary.

I just listened to his lecture on good and evil characters, where he points out something I realize now is true: viz., that anyone wanting to improve public morality is better off creating realistic characters, with real flaws, who make real mistakes, who feel the wrong things at the wrong time, give in to the wrong impulses at the wrong times, yet still feel good hearted, likeable and–to use a contemporary word–relatable.

As he says, characters who are perfectly good make ordinary people feel weak and disempowered, because we rightly apprehend no hope of ever attaining those heights.  I will say in this regard that it has long been my opinion that saints only become perfect among those who never knew them, and become most saintly long after they are dead.  It is very easy to tell stories then.  And those stories have tended, in the Western world, to be repurposed in the service of the Church, and intended to add to ITS glory.

Surely it is significant that little was written about Jesus for at least a century after his death, and that much that was written in the first few centuries was suppressed by the Church, which–in speaking for God– also made efforts to achieve on Earth God’s omnipotence in its own body?

There is really no way to know what all was flushed down Byzantine and Roman Memory Holes.  How much was written beyond the fragments we found in Nag Hammadi we have no way of even guessing, any more than we really know how much was burned in Alexandria.  And I will note that in my understanding the FIRST purge–the first book burning–was done by Christians, who in much of their history have been vastly less tolerant and more violent than the Muslims.  That history is not well known by most, although since little history is known to anyone any more, that isn’t surprising.

I will recommend again Gibbon’s “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” as one of the more useful historical texts I have read.

And as Fielding says, people with bad traits, disagreeable traits, in seeing them portrayed in characters who are absolutely wicked, despair  of ever redeeming themselves.  That just confirms people in their worst impulses.  It doesn’t reform them.

Nobody is perfectly good or evil.  Even the worst of us have occasional good moments–or so I would argue it is useful to assume, even if they are small and fleeting–and the best among us do bone-headed things from time to time.

Jones’ goodness is crooked.  That is what makes it perfect.  I am very sure that Fielding, if he had encountered the Tao Te Ching, would have kept it closer to him than his Bible.

He says at the beginning his topic is “Human Nature”.  And he has been as good as his word.  And really, really funny in many moments.

This book is proving useful in my own personal growth, for sure, in many ways.

Good question for any Leftists out there

If your friends were to suddenly accuse you of racism, how could or would you defend yourself?

Could you simply say “you all know me, and you know that isn’t true”?

Possibly, if they were relatively sane, but what if the accusation got into wider circulation?  What if you were accused in a public forum, or in a school newspaper, or if gossip were spread across a campus or corporation?  Could you control that damage?

Here is the thing, people who DO know you may forgive you, but if they side with you in one of these dismally generic witch hunts, they themselves get thrown in with you.  No matter how irrational the charge is–no matter how absurd it is, and utterly lacking in evidential basis in either the facts or your personal history or actual beliefs–to be accused is to be convicted, and to be associated with a “guilty” person is to be guilty by association.  There are no appeals, and there is no hearing with respect to evidence.

The mob needs regular blood, and the people running this shit show work hard to give them red meat every week.

And here is something I will speculate is quite possible: what if the Left brands 2+2=4 a “White Supremacist” slogan?  They ran with the OK sign, so why not basic math?   I truly, literally, think this is possible.

What if you were overheard saying, “OF COURSE 2+2=4, but you need to be careful who you say that to”?  White Supremacist.  You fucking racist.  It is literally this bad.  This is not satire.  I’m not joking in the least.

What got me thinking about this was two idiots on a public access radio station were saying “Eric Clapton is a racist.”

Now, I read a lot of news, so unless I’ve missed something, the logic has to have come from the fact that he opposes mandatory spike protein injections, because he himself got the jab, and was nearly paralyzed.  Then he was condemned for speaking publicly about it, despite there being ZERO indication he was doing anything but telling the truth.

You get that?  He did what he was told, suffered terribly, talked about it, and now he is hated by the Left, which may as well call him a racist, since anyone who opposes the sole possible salvation of black people–the Democrats, without whom all black people are helpless infants–MUST be racist.  Get that?  If you get the jab, suffer side effects, then complain about it: RACIST!!!  BIGOT!!!

It’s fucking unbelievable.  I don’t know what the solution is.  It’s not a question of bad ideas, but deep seated and stable mental illness.  How can you show the light to blind people who think they can see better than you?

But it is very, very obvious that anyone who values fairness, who values kindness and compassion, and anyone who actually wants to HELP the black community–rather than yell at white people for crimes they haven’t committed–has got to reject the totality of Democrats, and many if not most Republicans.

Turning the other cheek

I think I just figured out what this means, or at least what I am going to decide it means for me.

As I continue to share, I continue to work on deep relaxation, which–to the extent any of us can bring it into our daily work amounts to peace of mind, or just peace–and one of the recurring reflexive reactions I keep getting is a burst of panic that going too deep will leave me helpless.

Most of us, particularly men, are primed for trouble.  We are not necessarily looking for it–certainly most of us don’t want to cause it–but that readiness is there.

Here is the thing: to truly find peace in this world, you have to cede the first two steps to the other person.  The first step is the offense, whatever it may be.  But then you have to commit, to yourself, in advance, that you will give them the next offense too, without reacting.

Granting this in advance means you don’t have to plan your reaction.  You don’t have to mentally rehearse various scenarios where you react from righteous anger.

And obviously there is a give and take between movies and reality, but perhaps the single most common scenario in American action films is the reluctant warrior, who doesn’t want to be violent, but is forced into by violent bad guys.  This is pretty much every action movie ever, from Rambo to John Wick.  As long as the setup is good, the “good guy” can be violent for at least 75% of the movie.

Turning the other cheek is saying “I would rather die than live every day with all those visions in my head.”  All that tension is a death in itself; and of course most days everything is just fine, and if it isn’t, our tension and latent aggression will often have played a role.  Not always, but most of the time it takes two to tango.

So ceding the first two steps is not full passivity.  It is not saying that you will put up with anything for forever, but it is a gift you give YOURSELF that allows you to live with peace and dignity that you would otherwise be denying yourself.

I rarely say this–I’m not sure I’ve ever said this–but this is a very important insight.  Ahimsa is not helplessness, but it is an openness that cannot be achieved any other way.

This could work

It is not just possible but LIKELY that tens of millions of developing children could have this mask bullshit inflicted on them, and NOT ONE LIFE WILL BE SAVED.  Not one.  Not that of a child, who is not in any real danger according to any honest accounting; nor that of a teacher, who is also not in any real danger from this disease which children are unlikely to carry; nor a parent, for the same reason, that children simply do not seem to be vectors of transmission.

Remember that the data is in from Sweden, and keeping kids in school, unmasked, worked fine.  If memory serves NOT ONE CHILD OR TEACHER DIED.  Not one.  Not in the past 16 months, despite zero real precautions being taken other than more frequent cleanings, which cost little in effort or money or emotional pain.

So here is my suggestion: I think the Dean’s of the top 20 medical schools in the country should sign a petition asking for a return to science and sanity.  Failing that, I think hundreds of Professors of Medicine, and as many doctors in general as possible, should sign the petition saying DO NOT MASK OUR CHILDREN.

Let us say that 100 kids kill themselves when they are asked to endure ANOTHER FUCKING YEAR OF THIS (for all they know, at any rate).  Let us say that 1 life is saved with the masks.  That means the death rate FROM THE POLICY is 100x that which would have obtained otherwise.

And let us say that another 250 kids kill themselves in the next ten years, in part because of the trauma and frustration and lost opportunities of the past year.  If the masks are the straw that broke the kids back, then they get laid at the feet of Joe Biden and his politicized CDC.  A 3,500% in death, and at that WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER.  When they obviously DID know better.  This is not rocket science.  This is just science.

And even if it WERE rocket science, we are paying rocket science dollars to these assholes.

I think every honest doctor on the planet should be up in arms about all of this.  Those who are not, those who are not standing up to be counted, can be assumed to be cowards, stupid, or witting and willing parts of this global crime, as among others Fauci and Walensky plainly are.

If sanity prevails against all odds, we should have Nuremburg Trials for all those inflicting this massive horror on the world.

For now, we all need to put our shoulders to the grindstone and work for that return to sanity.

Perhaps the Great Barrington Declaration could be appended to specifically recommend against mask wearing of children.  That would at least be working off of something actually existing.

But me personally, if I were the Dean of a medical school, the patent bullshit being spouted everywhere would be eating my gut up in agonizing ways.  These people need to decide if they are for science and sanity, or for criminal negligence, criminal opportunism, and a world filled with demonstrable lies.

Save yourself, at least first

The Journey by Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice—
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do—
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Protecting life

You can only protect life in life.  It is not worth doing anything and everything to preserve the body.  The life that matters cannot in the end be guarded.  You have to risk openness.

And my–I will switch to first person here–vulnerability has a flip side: every moment I remain open is a moment of victory and successful rebellion over darkness and death.  It is to be celebrated.

I am far from trusting people, but I am close to trusting days, to the sun, trees moving in the wind, birds singing, and a sense that I have more than I need.

Simone Biles

I am going to permit myself a comment.

There is no us in sports.  You have no relationship to her.  Her life is her life, to be lived precisely as she sees fit.  Neither our physical safety nor our collective well being depends on her, or any other athlete (or for that matter entertainer or celebrity of any sort).

Here is Babylon Bee’s take on this: https://babylonbee.com/news/man-lying-on-couch-covered-in-cheeto-dust-refers-to-favorite-sports-team-as-we

Most of her life, she has been Tom Cruise in the first half of Top Gun.  She has been daring, audacious, and full of speed.  Apparently, from time to time, for reasons neither she nor anyone around her really understands, she is Tom Cruise after he lost Goose.

If this is true, her sole concern was for the team, making her decision laudable.

I will comment though that we all have lives of our own to live, and I cannot see how anyone could want so badly to live vicariously through others, as so many seem to do in this and other countries, without having forfeited nearly all the joy, adventure, risk, and meaningful hard work possible for them in their own lives.

I hope she comes back.  I will be fine if she doesn’t.  But for her sake, and her sake alone, I hope she gets everything sorted out.  God knows I understand emotional pain.  What I DON’T understand is the grit and pure physical courage it has taken for her to be the best of the best. If you are honest, neither do you.

Pray for her.  Pray for all who are hurting.

Obvious truth if you think about it

It would be much easier for the media to make COVID disappear than it has been to keep the panic going for 16 months or so.

Almost no one is dying from it.  Our hospitals are not full.  It’s not even as bad, most likely, even at this moment, as the ordinary flu; and if it is, it is because it has displaced the flu without being particularly more deadly.

I know many, many people who have had COVID, and none of them had breathing trouble, and the worst complaints–among people who started out in poor health–were exactly equal to a bad, longer lasting flu.

If it served the political purposes of the elites who control our media, the whole thing could be vanished and memory holed virtually over night.  I very definitely believe this to be literally true.

On

Off

On

Off.

It’s that simple.  And a third of the country lets them do it with impunity.

2+2=4

It occurred to me today that if you wore a t shirt saying this, you would trigger people on many college campuses.

Ponder that, if you agree with me.

ZERO new cases: https://covid19.who.int/region/euro/country/se

I truly believe that the Delta variant is happening MAINLY in the vaccinated, and that the vaccinated are the ones driving viral evolution.

We are being told the opposite of the truth.  We are being tricked into going in the direction OPPOSED to safety.

Madness.
