I think the shortest means of making the obvious linkage is to describe them as rival street gangs, each trying to take over the city, absolutely and finally, both fully committed to extreme violence, and differing only in relatively unimportant doctrinal details. I will note that even though both were committed Communists, there was enough difference between Stalin and Trotsky that the former had the latter killed. There were and are rival Communist street gangs too. Churches splinter: this is the nature of radical individual dependence upon abstract belief and group membership.
